This obsession I’ve had with hats made of fruit has sprouted another lovely. I have already started a lemon sister as well, so I think that these are going to end up as a series. This would be sister #2, and I think they are the three daughters of Hesperus.
So, she is bright and richly sweet. Her orange hat is brimming with golden sun warmed juice. It sparkles in the sun and smells wonderfully in the salted breeze. She looks wonderful on the drying wall with her big sister ‘Fop in Lime’. The Lemon nymph that I am working on now is just as pretty as these two. They are not Vogue cover girls these three, no. They are wild seed. They are themselves, brave and unapologetic for who they are. They are the real deal, with edible fashion statements.
Yeah baby, that’s what I’m talking about. Stay tuned for the final sister and I’ll take a picture of them all together too, so I may formally introduce the Hesperides in the proper fashion.

One of my favorite Zen puzzles, otherwise known as koans, is:

“Things are not as they seem, nor are they otherwise.”

It’s a reminder that life always has two sides.

The side of personal perception is the way things seem to us from the position we’re looking from.

Every vantage point has its built in biases and is never the whole picture.

The other side is the whole picture that includes everything beyond what we see - beyond what they seem.

The answer to this and most koans is that there is no way out.

Our view is always limited by the point in time and space we’re in.

This view is always real, valid, and accurate for what it is.

And there is always more.

This explains why we are smarter together;

that truth lives in the intersection of curiosity and conversation.

Reality.

It is what you think it, what you make of it, and what you desire it to be. Therefore…working towards one definition is a futile process for me as an individual.

I want to explore and learn and fail.

That’s what makes me feel alive.

I used to think it was some kind of failure inside myself that I could not just pick one thing to loose myself in.

Not one subject matter has been able to hold my passions forever.

The discovery of new things is what fuels the journey I am on as an artist and a human.

I am saying I want to create my own world and I no longer believe that is pie-in-the-sky thinking.

Maybe I can do it all and that will be my personal style…to not have one at all. Well, that’s not true about style,

I have a style that is all my own…I understand that I am always going to do things my own way.

Hmmmm, I wonder what I will think of this tomorrow?

We shall see I guess.

This work took some time to tell me when she was ready to be finished. Small details is all she asked for and that’s what I gave her. The textures in the background and the green foreground are subtle, but vital to the energy of the work. Her wings are stilling themselves from her flight so are slightly blurred. Her gown brings the fiery reds and deep oranges of the “anything is possible” of an Indian Summer. She smells of fresh cut grass, sunshine on the lavender fields and the earthy dust of opportunity.

She reminds me that this is not the time to trap myself within virtue. I do not need to be caught on the treadmill of doing what is “right”, I must release my expectations of what I am learning, and allow the growth to happen. Transition isn’t supposed to feel good, or none of us would ever make it through it at all. I am what I am, I am doing what I need to be doing, and the Universe will provide the necessary synchronicities to happen as I continue my act of spiritual faith in myself and the greater power of the Original Creator, faith that I can channel that creative energy, faith that I can use it for good in my life and in every life I may touch, or know; faith in the love for every living thing. I accept what I am asking for, I will work hard, remain true to myself and look no gift horse in the mouth.

So be it.
